Behind the Scenes
When writer/director Jeff Wadlow first came up with the story for Cry Wolf, he envisioned a liars' club populated with business people. What he ended up going with was the suggestion that the story take place at a high school instead. Wadlow cast actors Topher Grace and Estella Warren in the lead roles of Owen Matthews and Dodger Allen, created a trailer for the movie, and submitted it to the Chrysler Million Dollar Film Festival. That trailer, then titled Living the Lie won the million dollar grand prize. Wadlow used the prize money to finance a full length version of the movie.
Working on a shoestring million dollar budget and with a distribution deal through Universal Studios and Hypnotic Entertainment, Wadlow set out to make his project. Acclaimed casting director Fern Champion (credited with discovering Cameron Diaz and the cast of "Beverly Hills, 90210") cast a group of young up-and-comers in the lead roles. British actor Julian Morris ("Young Arthur") stepped into the role of Owen Matthews, Canadian actress Lindy Booth (Dawn of the Dead) became Dodger Allen, and Jared Padalecki ("Gilmore Girls") was cast as Tom. Actor/singer Jon Bon Jovi also signed up for the project.
Cry Wolf filmed at the University of Richmond in Virginia during the fall of 2003. To save money, students at the school were hired as extras. Other cost cutting factors were used, not the least of which involved actors carrying flashlights for lighting during night-time scenes, holding the lights to their faces, and reciting their lines while the scene was shot.
In Cry Wolf, Bon Jovi plays a prep school teacher whose students are embroiled in a game of lies. Bon Jovi's co-star, Lindy Booth, in an interview she gave to The Toronto Star, describes Bon Jovi as being "Very serious about acting" and "a great kisser".
